Go Fishing!

Updated: Sep 24

A Moment of Unusual Openness

Across our communities something remarkable is happening. Conversations about eternity, once avoided and out right rejected, are breaking out all over the country. People who once dismissed the name of Jesus are now asking hard questions about life, death, and what comes next.

We have seen men and women turning to Christ in recent weeks with a hunger that can only be explained by the Spirit of God. Yet many of these new believers have no church family and no shepherd to guide them as they take their first steps of faith. Left alone, some will drift; others may never grow into the fullness of discipleship that Jesus desires for them.

Don’t Wait on the Shore

"And he saith unto them, Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men." - Matthew 4:19

When Jesus called the fishermen of Galilee, He did not tell them to stay in their boats until fish jumped inside. He said, “Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men.” Fishing requires movement. It means leaving the comfort of the dock and going where the fish actually are. It demands patience, skill, and a willingness to get wet.

Pastors and ministry leaders, the same is true for us today. The harvest will not gather itself. If we remain in our offices or behind our pulpits waiting for seekers to find us, we will miss the moment. The gospel calls for action, street-level action, living-room action, community-event action.

Responding to a Cultural Jolt

The recent martyrdom of Charlie Kirk has jarred our culture! Whether people knew him personally or simply followed his public work, the suddenness of his loss has awakened deep questions about mortality. Tragedy often does that. God can redeem even painful events by stirring spiritual curiosity.

In our own church, many visitors have walked through the doors because of this moment. They are searching for hope, for answers, for a place to belong. But this opportunity is not unique to one congregation. It is a kingdom-wide invitation. Every shepherd of souls should see the open door.

Practical Steps for Pastors and Churches

  1. Equip Individuals for Everyday Evangelism.

Provide encouragement so every believer can share their story and invite neighbors into gospel conversations.

  2. Be Present in the Public Square.

Attend local gatherings, host community forums, and show up where spiritual hunger is already visible. The shepherd who smells like the sheep will find the lost sheep.

  3. Preach with Bold Clarity.

In a world of noise and confusion, proclaim Christ crucified and risen. Keep the cross at the center. The times call for a trumpet with a clear sound.

The Urgency of the Hour

Jesus said the fields are white for harvest (John 4:35). The moment we are living in is not business as usual. History shows that spiritual awakenings often come in sudden waves—and just as suddenly they can fade. We cannot assume the current openness will last.

Every conversation matters. Every invitation matters. Every act of hospitality matters. If we hesitate, the fish may swim elsewhere. If we act, we may see entire families, neighborhoods, and even cities transformed.

Follow the Master Fisherman

Ultimately, the call to “go fishing” is a call to follow Christ more closely. He is the one who draws people to Himself; we are simply His nets and hands. Our task is obedience.

Christian, leave the shoreline of comfort. Step into the waters of faith. Cast the net again and again and again. The Savior who promised to make us fishers of men has not changed, and the seas around us are alive with searching souls.

The fish are biting so fishing.
